Junto com os escravos vieram também alguns conceitos que precisamos discutir: intercâmbio x assimilação x apropriação cultural. Intercâmbio é uma troca de culturas saudável e sem hierarquias; normalmente acontece entre culturas que não têm relações de opressão e, portanto, não demonstram preconceitos entre elas. Assimilação é a violência extrema: a aniquilação total de uma cultura por outra por meio de substituição; comum entre culturas que apresentam níveis tecnológicos muito discrepantes, em que a cultura com tecnologia bélica mais potente submete e assimila a cultura de poderio bélico menos potente. A apropriação é uma opressão sutil, porém muito perigosa: ela se mostra por meio dos privilégios do corpo opressor sobre o corpo oprimido, reforçando o empoderamento do opressor e seu poder de escolha do opressor sobre a falta de escolha dos oprimidos. Em geral, acontece dentro da mesma cultura, entre grupos com diferentes posições sociais. O Racismo é um exemplo.

Along with the slaves came some concepts that we need to discuss: exchange x assimilation x cultural appropriation. Exchange is a healthy and hierarchical exchange of cultures; it usually happens between cultures that do not have relations of oppression and, therefore, do not show prejudices between them. Assimilation is extreme violence: the total annihilation of one culture by another through substitution; common among cultures that present very different technological levels, in which the culture with more powerful war technology submits and assimilates the culture of less powerful war power. Appropriation is a subtle but very dangerous oppression: it shows itself through the privileges of the oppressive body over the oppressed body, reinforcing the empowerment of the oppressor and his power of choice of the oppressor over the lack of choice of the oppressed. In general, it happens within the same culture, between groups with different social positions. Racism is an example.
